The region is also known as “Chateaux Country” where the French aristocracy built their castles and stately homes over centuries along the beautiful Loire valley. Most of the sites and their amazing gardens are open to the public. Some of the highlights are the Chateaux of Amboise, Chenonceau, Chinon and Chambord but there are nearly 3 000 marvelous edifices spread along the valley. Tours is the region’s capital and its historic quarters, bustling market squares surrounded by half timbered houses is definitely worth a visit. Other cities in the region include Chartres and Orleans both know for their Cathedrals, cobbled streets and stunning architecture.
